Top 12 Summer Myths

You've probably heard these common myths about summer, but according to MSN Healthy Living, don't believe them!

1. Peeing on a jellyfish sting is helpful.

This myth, made popular by the television show "Friends," may actually cause the sting victim more pain. There is definitely a better choice: vinegar. Soak a paper towel and press it on the injury for half an hour.

2.. Cold showers cool you off fastest.
When you are hot and jump into a cold shower, your blood vessels constrict, which prevents you from taking in the coolness. Shower in tepid water, or eat or drink something cold instead.

3. You can't get sunburned on a cloudy day.

UV rays go through the clouds and can burn you.

4. Any drink can hydrate you.
Certain drinks can be a diuretic, causing dehydration. These include caffeinated drinks, drinks high in added sugars, and alcohol.

5. You burn more calories in warm weather.
Your body is able to adjust to the heat, so the extra calories burned doesn't amount to much.

6. Longer days disrupt your sleep cycles.
Your body is on a schedule, aimed at getting a healthy amount of sleep each night. Even though it's lighter later, it shouldn't affect your sleep.

7. Air conditioning increases risk of catching cold.
Colds are caused by viruses, not temperature.

8. Salt water can heal a cut.
There are a lot of bacteria and microorganisms in salt water that can cause infection.

9. Butter eases sunburn pain.
It just doesn't work. Use aloe vera for relief.

10. Poison ivy is contagious.
The poison ivy rash and blisters are not contagious. Poison ivy can spread from person to person if sharing clothes, or if the poison ivy resin is still on the person's skin.

11. Getting a base tan helps prevent sunburn.

There is no such thing as a base tan. Sun exposure can damage your skin no matter how tan you are.

12. A dip in the pool is a good substitute for a shower.
Unless you know the chlorine levels are high enough to kill bacteria, you should take a shower.
